Portuguese Government eyes access to key niche markets

Luísa Fragoso, the General Consul of Portugal in Johannesburg, left, met with OBC Group’s MD Tony da Fonseca to discuss new niche market opportunities in Africa and EU through established Portuguese business networks.

“We would like to explore your market insights and see how we can be of assistance. The Food Industry in Portugal is expanding and there are several Portuguese companies that have managed to enter some African and global markets quite successfully. Therefore, we could be in a position to facilitate potential partnerships with such enterprises.”, said the General Consul of Portugal in Johannesburg during a visit to our head office.

“It is also our objective to increase our exports as a country. We have a small internal market but our products are of world class quality. As far as dairy and related products are concerned, for example, we currently have a surplus in Azores.” she said.

“In 29 years OBC Chicken has grown to a network of over 60 stores and today we’ve succeeded in establishing a foothold in almost every region. With stores in Gauteng, North West, Northern Province, Free State, Mpumalanga, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Northern Cape Provinces,” explained Tony da Fonseca.

“We do import some chicken from several geographies, including Europe, depending on quality and cost to meet local demand. We also sell truck loads of milk”, he said adding that a possible expansion across the border into Africa is in the pipeline.

During her visit, Mrs Fragoso also had the opportunity to tour our Dry Goods Distribution Centre and gain an exclusive inside view of the Group’s retail operations.
